Living in Colour

My latest collection of acrylic paintings was a pretty bold idea that I was honestly quite nervous to showcase. A major inspiration for the “Colourful Rooms” series was a collection of funky, ornate, brightly coloured lacquer frames created by Roma Moulding, a frame manufacturer that I worked with in a previous position as an art and framing consultant and am now partnered with as an independent artist. I made these frames an integral part of each artwork in the series which uses a mainly monochromatic colour palette to highlight the incredible natural colours of the creatures that are depicted in each painting.

I have always loved exploring colour through my artwork, and this challenging project with limited colour palettes allowed me to dive even deeper into understanding and appreciating colour. Colour has always sparked joy for me, so I like to use bright and bold ones in my art to try to elicit the same feeling for the viewer. This series acts as a colour study that also combines my interest in interior design and my appreciation for nature. The rooms were designed from my imagination and contain real animals and plants and their true colours, with a few complimentary colours to accent and further emphasize the main colour of each painting.

A recurring theme in my work is a combination of animals and nature with cities or man-made settings to try to bridge the gap between humans and the natural world. Nature is so remarkable, so this series fundamentally aims to get the viewer to better appreciate the amazing beauty of nature in a fun way that hopefully also inspires a desire to live more harmoniously with it. I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend some time in their living room with a flamingo?
