Flowers are a challenge for me and I until I tried to paint them, I had no idea how difficult they are to capture. There is so much light and shade and transparency and play with colours.
I think flowers need very little background as they usually have so much colour. Kind of like white dinner plates are more dramatic for a fancy meal.
The water lilies were an experiment for me because I saw them during a canoe trip and then I painted from memory. I thought that maybe that would help me to look closer and really know what they look like.
In German there is a difference between ‘kennen’ und ‘wissen’ and I think that makes a difference when you paint something.
